In 2009, ESa was one of only five architecture and design firms nationally and the only one in the southeast to be certified as a charter member of the Planetree Visionary Design Network.  This certification establishes ESa as a specialist in evidence-based design following the Planetree philosophy of healing design for both healthcare and senior living projects. 

A number of our professionals, in fact, have become nationally recognized specialists in particular areas of design. In addition to authoring white papers and articles for national publications and conducting research studies, several of our team members serve as speakers and presenters at relevant national conferences.

Two editions of a book co-authored by ESa President Richard L. Miller, FAIA, and ESa Chairman Earl S. Swensson, FAIA, have been used widely as a healthcare design textbook in colleges and universities. The first was originally released in 1995; the revised version was released in 2002 as Hospital and Healthcare Facility Design.

A Passion For Design, recently published book authored by Earl S. Swensson, FAIA, delves into the early beginnings of ESa and the principles the firm was founded upon. “Safety Versus Aesthetics” represents just one of the in-depth, researched articles authored by ESa professionals for national publications. Hospital and Healthcare Facility Design, released by W.W. Norton in 2002 and co-authored by Earl Swensson and Richard (Dick) Miller, is currently being revised for a third release.
